5 leaders quit LDP over grand alliance with Ershad

Five leaders of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) yesterday resigned from the party protesting the formation of grand alliance with former dictator HM Ershad and practice of dynasty culture in the party.

They are -- party Joint Secretary General Naim Jahangir, member of the Adviser Committee Abu Mohammad Istihak Aziz Olfat, Assistant Joint Secretary Sadek Ahmed Khan, Assistant Secretary of Labour Affairs Shaheed Bablu and Vice President Syed Didar Bakht.

"LDP was launched on October 26 with pledges that it would not compromise with corruption, terrorism, nepotism and dynasty culture. But several party committees were formed ignoring these principles. Recently, the party formed grand alliance with former autocratic ruler Ershad. Protesting these irregularities, we quit LDP," Naim Jahangir said showing the cause of their resignation at a press conference at the Jatiya Press Club in the capital yesterday.

Claiming themselves as freedom fighters, the aggrieved leaders also said that over one hundred activists along with them have quit the party.

Naim said that although the party was formed to protest against the corruption and dynasty culture inside the BNP, it now itself is practising these.

"We cut off all relations with LDP because top leaders of the party violated its own moral value. They joined the Awami League and Jatiya Party (Ershad) led grand alliance for grabbing the power. Now it is not a truly alternative party, " said Abu Mohammad Istihak Aziz Olfat while addressing the conference.

Denying the possibility of joining any alliance, he said that they would launch a new party immediately with the freedom fighters and the new generation people. He also urged all democratic minded leaders and activists to resign from LDP and join with them.
