Berlin's name game

Berlin's historic Olympic Stadium could carry the name of a sponsor as the city's financial bosses look to maximise the cash benefits of the ground which hosted the World Cup final this summer.

A report in the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper claimed that the sale of the rights to the stadium could bring in around eight million euros over an eight-to-ten year period.

"The name of a sponsor for the stadium is in our interests," said Werner Gegenbauer, an official with Hertha Berlin, the Bundesliga football club which play their home games at the ground.

"It's one of the areas where we can improve our financial returns."

The 72,000-capacity Olympic Stadium was the site of Adolf Hitler's 1936 Olympics and as well as welcoming matches in the 2006 World Cup finals, it also hosts NFL Europe matches and the final meeting of the Golden League athletics.

The money which would be brought in would finance new developments such as a swimming pool, a race course and an open-air theatre.

Stadium chiefs also hope that improvements would boost the city's chances of staging another Olympic Games.
