3 die in Meghna launch collision

A mid-river collision between two launches on the Meghna Friday midnight at Char Jalalpur near the meeting line of Chandpur and Shariatpur districts left three people dead and at least 20 injured.

Superintendent of Police of Chandpur district said the collision occurred when MV Shuravi-VI, heading for Barisal from Dhaka, rammed MV Salahuddin II, heading for Madaripur, in the middle part of the vessel due to poor visibility in dense fog.

In MV Salahuddin II, which was heavily damaged, three people travelling on the first floor including a woman died on impact and two others are still missing. Both the launches were packed with passengers heading home for Eid holidays.

Panicked passengers started to run confusedly, hurting themselves.
