Two different incidents

There is a lot of difference between the two happenings, the first one had taken place in broad daylight near the Jatiya Press Club in full view of the public, while the second one took place at night around 10:30pm in the office of the former Energy Adviser, a pro-BNP person. However, as bad luck would have it, they were exposed by our vigilant media people, which led to many comic scenes captured on celluloid!

It may be recalled that Janatar Mancha had been put up by the then mayor late Hanif to mobilise people to reject the results of the farcical elections held in Feb.1996 contested by the BNP only. The Awami League and others boycotted it, as the then BNP govt. had not agreed to accept the demand for introducing the caretaker government system at the time. Then BNP govt. had to resign in the face of widespread public agitation and introduce the caretaker govt. system! The ensuing election was won by the Awami League and its allies.

However, the BNP did not forget the officers who had associated themselves with the Mancha. After coming to power in 2001, it held inquiries against the alleged officers and punished them.
