19 killed in road crashes in 4 days

At least 19 people were killed and 56 others injured in road accidents across the country since Saturday last.Rina Begum was killed and her husband Shamsuddin Ahmed, was critically injured yesterday when a speedy pickup van hit their motorcycle at the back at Mamarispur on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Bhaluka upazila. Shamsuddin, who is an army personnel, was rushed to the Combined Military Hospital in a critical condition. Toll supervisor of Rupsha Bridge Shamim Ahmed was killed at Kudir Battala under Rupsha upazila yesterday as he slipped off a running Khulna-bound passenger bus. Tohina Begum, a minor girl, was run over by a speedy bus on Kishoreganj-Dhaka highway at Chhoisoti area on Tuesday, reports our Kishoreganj correspondent. Pantu Ali, 48, of Harinakundo upazila of Jhenidah, was killed as a tank lorry from Chuadanga collided head-on with his power tiller on Tuesday. His companion was injured in the incident. On Monday, two persons were killed and 20 others injured in two road accidents in Dinajpur district. Two Thakurgaon-bound night coaches from Dhaka that were in a mad rush collided, leaving Masudur Rahman, 35, driver of one of the coaches, dead on the spot and 20 passengers injured, police said. Motorcycle rider Gopal Chandra, 40, of village Katabari under Phulbari upazila, who was seriously injured when his bike hit a roadside tree at Kata point on Dinajpur-Dhaka highway, succumbed to his injuries at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital. In Habiganj, Shajib, 10, a student of class IV and son of Toufiq Miah was crushed under the wheels of a human-hauler 'Maxi' at Shahbazpur on Habiganj-Shayestaganj road on Saturday when he was returning home from school. Aggrieved people kept the road blocked for a few hours. In Manikganj, cattle trader Sorai Ali was killed when a cow-loaded truck overturned at Bathuli on Dhaka-Aricha highway on Saturday. Three cows were also killed in the accident. Four people including a Jubo League leader were killed and six others were injured in two separate road accidents in Gaibandha and Nilphamari districts on Saturday night. The dead were identified as advocate Tafsirul Ahmed lenin Bosunia, 32, president of Nilphamari pourashava unit of Juboleague, Milan Rahman, 28, of Sapmara village, Babul Hossain, 35 and Abdul Malek, 38, of Goalpara village under Gobindaganj upazila in Gaibandha. BSS adds from Sherpur: Fuad Chowdhury, son of former whip of Jatiya Sangsad Zahed Ali Chowdhury, was killed while Zahed's another son Fahad Chowdhury and sister-in-law Kokila Chowdhury were critically injured as the car carrying them collided head-on with a coaster at Nalaka Kurshabadagoier on the Sherpur-Dhaka highway yesterday. Masud Rana, 9, son of Sayedul Islam, was killed being run over by a truck in Nakla upazila on Sherpur-Dhaka highway on Sunday, reports our Sherpur correspondent. In another accident on Saturday evening, two people were injured when a bus hit their bicycle on the same road. They were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where Shamim, 19, died later. Saidur Rahman, 55, son of Abdul Motaleb of Jamsedpur village in Biswanath upazila In Sylhet, was knocked down by a vehicle at Rampasha in the upazila on Monday. Later, he died at Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital. Two persons were killed and 30 others injured as a minibus skidded off into a road side ditch on Sylhet-Kanaighat Road yesterday morning, reports staff correspondent from Sylhet. The deceased are Provat Dev, 40, of Kulkandi and Golam Rabbani, 65, of village Islmabad under Golapganj upazila. In heavy fog, the driver of the Sylhet-bound minibus that started from Bagha lost its control at about 9:45am at Porgona bazar. Provat died on the spot while the other succumbed to his injuries at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Of the injured taken to the hospital, conditions of 10 were stated to be critical, hospital sources said. Motorcycle riders Abdul Halim Maznu, 45, a lecturer of Kalihati College, and his nephew Mohammad Milton, 35, were killed when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus crushed them on Tangail-Mymensingh Road at Bania under Ghatail upazila in Tangail at around 2:00pm on Tuesday, reports our Tangail correspondent.
