CPB, BSD too boycott Jan 22 polls

Political parties outside the two major alliances yesterday followed suit with the Awami League (AL)-led grand alliance's announcement to boycott the January 22 elections saying the polls have become farcical and one-sided.Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) in a press release yesterday said they will boycott the 'farcical' election as it will not be acceptable to the public because it will be held as part of the BNP-Jamaat alliance's 'desperate conspiracy' to hold on to power. The CPB, however, also slated the AL-led grand combine saying, "The alliance comprising 14 political parties, rajakars and a former dictator failed to confront the BNP-Jamaat combine's conspiracy to win the elections through the caretaker government." Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) also announced its boycott decision and the party candidates withdrew their nomination papers yesterday in an effort to resist the 'one-sided farcical election,' which is going to be held to implement the BNP-Jamaat's blueprint to remain in the power. Chittagong Hill Tracts-based United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) also declared to boycott the election yesterday alleging the caretaker government has failed to implement UPDF's seven-point election related demands. It alleged that the armed forces prevented the party activists from opening election offices in several areas. Bangladesh Muslim League, Jatiya Sramajibi Party, Prosperous Bangladesh Movement and Ganamukti Andolon also announced their poll boycott decisions.
