14-party says people to resist use of army against blockade

Awami League (AL)-led 14-party alliance yesterday warned the caretaker government (CG) that the people would not tolerate any conspiracy over army deployment in a bid to foil its countrywide blockade programmes on January 7 and 8. "The caretaker government is conspiring to use the army against the people but they will not tolerate this," 14-party Coordinator Abdul Jalil said. His warning came at a press conference following a meeting of the alliance at the AL central office, chaired by party presidium member Tofail Ahmed. Jalil, also AL general secretary, said they would enforce an all-out programme blockading highways, railways and waterways, all land and sea ports and cut off Dhaka from other parts of the country. He said vehicles carrying hajj pilgrims returning home would be out of the purview of the blockade. The alliance leader said the CG must not use the army to rig the election. He reiterated that no election would be allowed to take place in the country with Iajuddin as the CA. He must quit the office of the chief adviser as people would not accept any election until he does so, said the 14-party leader asking the CA to refrain from doing anything against the people.
