Iajuddin still firm on holding polls on time

President Iajuddin Ahmed said his caretaker government now has no business other than completing the process of the election scheduled for January 22."If there is any political problem, the next elected government will get the opportunity to resolve it," the president said during a meeting with advisers Major Gen (retd) Ruhul Alam Chowdhury and Prof Sufia Rahman at Bangabhaban last night. The meeting was part of the president's initiative to talk separately with his advisers initiated last Thursday, a spokesman for the Bangabhaban said. Quoting the president the spokesman said the caretaker government had made all efforts until the last date of the withdrawal of nomination papers to find a solution for the political standoff. The election schedule was changed four times and the polling date was fixed at the end of the 90-day time limit as stipulated by the constitution. As a result of the endeavour, all political parties had submitted their nomination papers. On the last day for the withdrawal of nomination papers, some candidates were elected unopposed as their opponents withdrew from the race. The president said taking oath to protect the constitution, it is a sacred duty of the caretaker government to uphold the constitution and extend all out cooperation to the Election Commission to hold the parliamentary elections. Our staff correspondent adds that the president told the advisers about completing the poll process as per schedule after consulting with former chief election commissioner Justice Abdur Rouf, Open University Vice-Chancellor Prof Ershadul Bari, and Supreme Court Registrar Fazlul Karim at Bangabhaban in the evening.
