Says Bhuiyan

BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan yesterday said the election must be held on January 22 and if the Awami League (AL) led grand alliance has any demands unfulfilled, the next government will fulfil them.At a press briefing at Hawa Bhaban Bhuiyan brushed aside the AL-led grand alliance's demand for rescheduling the poll date. He said his party will prepare a correct voter list and take initiative for voters' identity cards if they can go to power. The BNP may even consider the other demands of the AL-led grand alliance, he added. Earlier, President and Chief Adviser Iajuddin Ahmed in a statement issued on Saturday also said the elected government will have the scope for resolving the prevailing political crisis in accordance with the constitution. On seeking the Supreme Court's reference for extending the time for an election where all political parties will participate, Bhuiyan said, "The Supreme Court can only explain the ambiguity in the constitution. But there is no ambiguity in the issue of holding the election in 90 days and there is no need to seek the Supreme Court's explanation." The BNP leader blamed lawyers for making the situation confusing by fabricating unnecessary contradiction. "We did not want a one-sided election; rather we wanted an election with participation of all parties, which has now no scope. But there is no alternative to holding the election as the people also want election," Bhuiyan said. Bhuiyan quoted from a speech of Sheikh Hasina in parliament--when she was the prime minister--where she said the general election must be held within the 90-day period from power handover. "The country will face a constitutional crisis and the democratic process will be hampered if the election is not held timely," he said. Earlier yesterday, advisers Mahbubul Alam, Shoeb Ahmed and Shafiqual Haque Chowdhury met Mannan Bhuiyan at his Gulshan residence. Bhuiyan told reporters that it was only a "courtesy call and nothing else". Asked if they discussed the advisers' initiative to resolve the crisis, he said, "We did not discuss such kind of matters." Bhuiyan urged the AL-led 14-party alliance to withdraw their blockade programme. "They [the AL] have lost popularity because of their destructive activities...They have the right not to participate in the election but they have no right to create obstacles to polls," Bhuiyan said, adding that the AL will be responsible if the democratic process is obstructed.
