Premier Cricket in quagmire

The current political turmoil may jeopardise the Premier Division Cricket League that is scheduled to begin at three different venues from January 10.Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM), guardian of the most coveted domestic competition, has decided not to arrange any matches during political agitation programmes. "We are very concerned about the current political situation. We have yet to defer the start but one thing is confirm -- we will not arrange any match during blockade or anything of that sort," informed CCDM chairman Khondokar Jamiluddin yesterday. "It will be impossible to ensure security for the players during this kind of agitation programme and of course we will not take that risk," he added. It means that country's top cricketers' chance of participating in the first leg of the competition would be reduced further, an issue that has already created disagreement among the clubs. As per current schedule, the national stars will hardly be available for six matches in the league's second part -- the 50-overs competition after completion of the Twenty20 League -- due to their tour of Zimbabwe but Jamil feared that the number could be reduced following the crisis. "We will discuss all the issues in Tuesday's meeting. There is every chance to see more political programmes and that means we should postpone the matches. So undoubtedly national players' number of matches in the League will be reduced," he observed. The Tigers leave for a four-match one-day series in Zimbabwe on January 31 and they will get only a week at home before going to the World Cup which starts in the West Indies on March 13.
