Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad, a platform of lawyers, yesterday strongly condemned the mass arrest and demanded immediate release of the arrestees and payment of compensation to them.At an emergency general meeting, the Parishad leaders said the caretaker government has been arresting general people and leaders and activists of democratic movement in violation of a High Court order. They also demanded resignation of President Iajuddin Ahmed as the chief adviser to the caretaker government, reconstitution of the Election Commission, steps to make a correct voter list and announcement of a fresh election schedule. They urged all government and non-government officers, employees and teacher not to be involved in activities related to the January 22 election. The Parishad meeting was held at Shaheed Abdul Ahad Hall on the Supreme Court premises, with Mohammad Abdul Halim in the chair. Among others, Parishad President Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam, Joint Convener Md Layekuzzaman Molla, Vice-President Abdul Mannan Khan, Secretary AM Aminuddin, Md Mahbub Ali, M Enayetur Rahim and MA Mannan Mohan addressed the meeting. The speakers condemned the President/ Chief Adviser's unilateral decision to use the police, BDR, Rab and armed forces to curb the people's political rights. They urged the chief adviser to refrain from resorting to such activities that violate the constitutional rights of the people. They also called for forging a unity among lawyers and people to make a success the ongoing movement to save the country, constitution and judiciary.
