Hand over power to elected govt as soon as possible: BNP

Immediate past ruling party BNP yesterday hoped that necessary steps would be taken to hand over the power to the elected representatives as early as possible to end the state of emergency that the president declared as a 'temporarily action'.

National Standing Committee, highest policy making forum of the party, in a press release also urged the authorities concerned not to harass or repress any citizen of the country.

"The expectations came after reviewing the ongoing events as well as the state of emergency imposed by the president following a few inept political parties' announcement of violent programmes which could be the cause of the disruption of economic activities and security of public life and property," the press release said.

After a meeting of the party standing committee with Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the chair, BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan read out the release at a press briefing held at Hawa Bhaban.

The meeting attended by all the members of the standing committee discussed the latest political situation, Bhuiyan said.

The reporters, however, were not given any chance to ask questions.
