Hold election immediately
AL-led alliance asks interim govt

The Awami League (AL)-led grand alliance yesterday urged the caretaker government (CG) to take measures for holding a free and fair election immediately.

"We urge the CG to take appropriate steps to hold a free and fair election immediately through reconstituting the Election Commission, neutralising the administration and preparing an accurate voter list," AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil last night told a press briefing at his Gulshan residence.

He demanded immediate arrests of the criminals, black money owners and corrupt people after preparing a fresh 'neutral' list instead of the one prepared by the past BNP-Jamaat government.

Jalil, also coordinator of the alliance, said Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad would appear before the court today and hoped that he will get justice.

The alliance leaders thanked the armed forces for taking a stand in favour of the people and thwarting the 'violence inviting' and one-sided elections on January 22.

Prior to the briefing, the grand alliance held a meeting with AL presidium member Amir Hossain Amu in the chair and reviewed the latest political developments.

Senior grand alliance leaders Abdur Razzak, Tofail Ahmed, Suranjit Sengupta, Kazi Zafar Ahmed, Motia Chowdhury, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Rashed Khan Menon, Ruhul Amin Hawlader, Nurul Islam, Syed Zafar Sazzad, Dilip Barua, Hazi Abdus Samad, among others, attended the meeting.
