Our Liberation War
Negligence takes toll on memories

Most of the killing spots of the Liberation War in Dhaka are getting obliterated due to lack of proper initiatives to conserve those.

According to a list of the Liberation War Museum, there were at least 23 killing spots in the city where the Pakistani army massacred innocent Bangalees of 1971.

The government constructed a monument at Rayerbazar killing field under a project for constructing monuments and conserving the killing spots.

SM Abdur Rashid, director of the project, said they have got a list from the army that identified a total of 193 killing spots across the country. "The Liberation War ministry is now working with 35 killing spots," he told Star City.

The government has allotted a sum of Tk 8.27 lakh for constructing a monument at each of these 35 sites, Rashid said.

While visiting the killing spots, this correspondent found that most of the spots have been encroached or obliterated due to negligence by the authorities.

A toilet was constructed at Nurani Mosque killing spot at Muslim Bazar in Mirpur. When asked, Habibur Rahman, caretaker of the mosque, said: "There is nothing to see here".

In 2000, the Liberation War Museum with the help of army dug up the spot and unearthed skeletons of innocent Bangalees killed by the Pakistanis during the war.

The museum authorities took an initiative to build a monument at the spot but they could not implement the project due to non-cooperation by the immediate past government.

This correspondent found that several shops and other structures have been built at Shialbari killing spot in Rupnagar residential area. Locals said during the Liberation War the Pakistanis set up a camp in the area, which was a jungle at that time.

Rafiqul Islam, a local, said the Pakistanis used to hide the bodies in the marshy land during the war and people find bones while digging there for building construction.

Mofidul Hoque, one of the trustees of the Liberation War Museum, told Star City that the monuments of the Liberation War should carry a message to the next generation.

The Rayerbazar monument was not built following the original design, he alleged saying that the monument do not bear the message on crime against humanity.

Abut the digging and identification of the killing spots, he said digging up of such spots needs to follow scientific method so that evidence are not destroyed.

He said the Liberation War Museum is now conserving the Jallad Khana killing spot in Mirpur Section-10 to set up a museum there.

The work at the killing spot will be completed by next month, he said.
