8 killed in road accidents

At least eight people were killed and eight others injured in separate road accidents in Chittagong, Manikganj, Bogra and Kishoreganj yesterday.Our STAFF CORRESPONDENT from Chittagong adds: Two people were killed in a road accident yesterday in front of Nasirabad Govt Boys School on the CDA Avenue. The victims were identified as Shilpi Rani Barua, 35, wife of Tapash Kumar Barua of Raozan, and her niece Samapti Chowdhury alias Rocky, 15, daughter of Supriya Chowdhury of Rangamati, police said. Rocky was a student of class X of Rangamati Govt Girls High School while Shilpi was a housewife and her husband Tapash is the chief auditor of Rangamati District Development Board, relatives said. The accident occurred when a speeding truck hit a rickshaw and ran over its two passengers at around 11.45am while Shilpi along with Rocky and her son Shuvra Barua alias Joy was returning home from her son's school. A team of patrol police seized the truck and arrested its driver Mohammad Khokan, 20. Police said Khokan is an assistant of the driver. A case has been filed in this connection. Our Correspondent from Manikganj reports: Three people were killed and seven others injured, two of them critically, in a road accident on Dhaka-Singair-Manikganj road yesterday. The accident look place at around 3:30am at Basta area in Singair upzila when a truck hit a tempo from behind, Singair police sources said. Tempo helper Badsha, 18, of Dewli village and tempo passenger Abdur Razzak, 38, of Vakum village of the upazila died on the spot and an unidentified woman succumbed to her injuries on the way to hospital. Seriously injured tempo driver Zamir Uddin and six others were taken to different hospitals and clinics in Savar and Dhaka. Our Staff Correspondent from Bogra reports: Two people were killed in a road accident at "Vepra area" under Khaloo Upazila in the district on Bogra-Naongoan road yesterday. The dead were identified as Tapas, 35, and Ramanath, 40, of Narhatta village of the same upzila. The accident occurred when a speedy Naongoan-bound fuel tank lorry hit a rickshaw van, leaving to people dead on the spot. A case has been filed with Khaloo Police Station in this connection. Our Correspondent from Kishoreganj adds: A man was killed and another injured critically in a road accident on Bhairab-Brahmanbaria highway at Bhairab bridge area in the district yesterday. The dead was identified as Omed Ali, 30, and the injured Dhon Mia of Bashgari village of Bhairab upazila. The accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound bus hit a rickshaw coming from opposite direction, leaving rickshawpuller Omed Ali dead on the spot and passenger Dhon Mia injured critically, police and locals said. Police seized the bus and arrested its driver Jafar Ali. Critically injured Dhon Mia was admitted to Bhairab Upazila Health Complex, hospital sources said.
