Hold election within three months
Demand 89 DU teachers

Some 89 teachers of Dhaka University (DU) yesterday called on the caretaker government to hold a free, fair and peaceful general election within three months after reconstituting the Election Commission, preparing a flawless voter list and depoliticising the administration.

In a joint statement, they also called for restoration of all fundamental rights of the people, including holding meetings and rallies, at the earliest.

Hailing the appointment of a new caretaker government, the teachers also called for arrest of corrupt people and removal of those appointed on political considerations from the organisations involved in the election process, such as Red Crescent Society, National University and Bangladesh Open University.

They urged the caretaker government to form a high-powered committee to investigate all cases of corruption, irregularities and recruitment on political considerations in all public universities, including Dhaka University, and bring the persons responsible to justice.

Signatories to the statement include Prof Anisuzzaman, AK Azad Chowdhury, AAMS Arefin Siddiqui, Md Anwar Hossain, Syed Manzoorul Islam, Harun-ur Rashid, Abul Barakat, MM Akash, Ashraf Uddin Chowdhury, RIM Aminur Rashid, Mesbahuddin Ahmed, Nurur Rahman Khan, Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq, Akmal Hossain, Tofael Ahmed Chowdhury, Hossain Mansur, Ainul Islam, AKM Salahuddin, Wazihur Rahman, M Sekandar Hayat Khan, Farida Zaman and Akhtaruzzaman.
