'Demolish illegal structures from all river banks around capital'


Save Environment Movement yesterday staged a sit-in in front of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) building in the city demanding demolition of all illegal structures from the bank of the rivers Buriganga, Turag and Shitalakhha.

The leaders of the movement also demanded exemplary punishment to those involved in illegal constructions.

Led by Convener Abu Nasser Khan, a delegation of Save Environment Movement also submitted a memorandum to the BIWTA chairman to press home their demands.

The demands included formation of a committee to design the embankments before their construction.

The delegation comprising Managing Director General of Haor Development Board Enamul Haq, cultural activist Tariq Ali, Professor Dr Shafiqul Islam of Dhaka University and Advocate Abul Kalam Azad also took part in the sit-in that continued from 3:00 to 3:30pm.
