100 shanties burnt, property worth Tk 25 lakh damaged in Ctg


Some 100 tin-shed houses and a godown of Abul Khaer Group were gutted in a devastating fire damaging property worth around Tk 25 lakh at the city's Double Mooring area here in the port city in the early hours of yesterday.

Sources said the fire broke out at a slum of IW Colony at Zharnapara Dhebarparr at around 12:00midnight.

The fire spread fast engulfing the whole slum and reduced around 100 tin-shed houses to ashes.

It also spread to an adjoining godown of Abul Biri Company of Abul Khaer Group destroying a huge stock of raw materials used for making Bidi, a garage and a printing press housed in the tin-shed godown.

Eight fire fighting units from different fire stations of the city rushed to the spot and managed to bring the fire under control at around 5:00am.

Police said the fire originated from electric short-circuits while the loss of property in the fire was estimated at around Tk 25 lakh.
