Kibria's death anniversary observed

The second death anniversary of former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria was observed yesterday with several programmes held to commemorate the late Awami League (AL) leader.Kibria's family members including his widow Asma Kibria, son Reza Kibria, daughter-in-law Rina Sultana Kibria, his daughters, grand children, and sons-in-law placed floral wreaths at his grave at Banani in the capital yesterday morning, family sources said. A daylong recitation of the Quran was held at his Dhanmondi home while a milad mehfil was also held after Asr prayers at a nearby mosque. Recitation of the Quran and milad mehfils were also held at Kibria's village home in Sylhet. Different socio-cultural and political organisations, including AL and its front organisations paid tribute to the veteran economist by placing wreaths at his grave. AL General Secretary Abdul Jalil, Joint General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Presidium Members Tofail Ahmed, Abdur Razzak, Motia Chowdhury, Suranjit Sengupta and many others placed wreaths at his grave. Gonoforum President Dr Kamal Hossain and former Dhaka University Teachers' Association (Duta) president Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique also placed floral wreaths. A lecture on "Economic Policies and Strategies of Shah AMS Kibria" will be held at Institute of Diploma Engineers Auditorium at 4:00pm today. Bangladesh Foundation for Development Research will organise the event. Shah AMS Kibria and four others were killed in a grenade attack carried out shortly after a rally at Boidderbazar in Habiganj on January 27, 2005.
