Cardiac surgery promising in Bangladesh

For over a decade's service in the United Kingdom (UK) as a cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr Habibe Millat has come back in Bangladesh and joined Square Hospital in the capital to start his professional life in this country.

Dr Habibe Millat had been serving as a senior specialist registrar in the department of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Cork University Hospital, Ireland. He received FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons in the UK. Dr Millat has a wide range of professional experience in his discipline working in various institutes in the UK.

Dr Millat has several publications in national and international journals. He is also involved in the charity work in his home district Sirajgonj named Beacon of Light.

Recently he shared his views with The Daily Star about his return and the prospect of cardiothoracic surgery in our country.

With a view to serve the country he came back in the country. The most important reason he mentioned about his coming back is the set up of sophisticated hospitals in the country. "I always intended to come back in the country, but there was no set up in the respective field in the country ever before. Now the situation is more improved", expressed Dr Millat.

He informed that all patients are not suitable for intervention and surgery. Due to the lack of provision for cardiac surgery, patients had to suffer a lot finding no alternative.

He pointed that the cardiac surgery is promising in the country; big hospitals are coming forward with their high end set up. He said, for cardiac surgery, a proper team must be developed to provide the total care to the patients. We had not that team developed in the country ever before due to some reasons. Now it is the time to restore the hope of the patients suitable for cardiac surgery in the country and restore the dignity of local healthcare system.
