Traders fined for selling toxic chemicals as food colour


A mobile court yesterday raided 29 business entities in the old part of the capital and fined Tk 2 lakh 22 thousand for selling dangerous chemicals as 'food colour', marketing banned polythene and using faulty weighing tools.

The mobile court led by Magistrate Md Rokonud-Doula also sealed two illegal factories of polythene and mosquito coil and issued summons to four people as they escaped from their factory sites and houses.

A mobile court in Bogra fined Tk 4 lakh 50 thousand for preparing and marketing fake oral saline, salt, vermicelli and biscuit and keeping restaurant kitchens unhygienic.

In Dhaka, the mobile court raided 11 wholesalers of polythene bags in old Dhaka and seized all the bags found in those shops. They realised Tk 72,000 from eight wholesalers and issued summons against three eluding shop owners.

Raiding nine other shops at Moulvibazar, the court found the traders selling chemicals used for dyeing textile as food colour and charged them Tk, 120,000.

The court fined three sellers of spices Tk 30,000 for using faulty weighing stones. A seller was found selling 400 grams of spice for 500 grams by cheating with faulty weighing unit, sources said.

Later the court raided a polythene factory at Umesh Dutta Lane. At the factory gate there was a signboard that reads 'Mortgaged with the Imamganj branch of Dhaka Bank'. But the court's verification with the particular bank found the claim to be false.

Breaking the lock, the court members entered inside and found a polythene factory there. The court sealed the factory and instructed the police to seize the machinery on January 31.

The court also raided an unauthorised mosquito coil factory. Failing to find anybody there, the court ordered the Lalbagh Police Station to arrest factory owner Siraj Miah.

The mobile court continued the drive from noon to 7:00pm.

BOGRA DRIVE
A mobile court led by Magistrate AK Md Shamsul Ahsan fined Tk 4 lakh 50 thousand for preparing and marketing fake oral saline, salt, vermicelli, biscuit and keeping restaurant kitchens unhygienic, reports our Bogra correspondent.

The court fined Fiam Food Product Tk 1.5 lakh for making and keeping for sale spurious oral saline and banned polythene bags. Police arrested Mamunur Rashid and Salim for nonpayment of the fine money.

The mobile court collected Tk 3 lakh as fine from unhygienic establishments including Salin Hotel where the cook had infectious shin diseases in hand.
