Street drama festival not held due to cop objection

Group Theatre Federation, a member of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, could not inaugurate its street drama festival scheduled to begin at the Central Shaheed Minar in the city yesterday as the police did not give permission showing security reasons.Like every year, the federation organised the seven-day Patha Natak Utsab (street drama festival) this year to mark the Amar Ekushey but could not start the programme due to objections from the police. Sammilita Sangskritik Jote President Nasir Uddin Yusuf Bachchu and General Secretary Abdul Quddus, Federation President M Hamid and General Secretary Jhuna Chowdhury met the IGP and the police commissioner yesterday to seek permission in this regard. During the meeting, the leaders urged the authorities to give permission for the festival. The police officials said they would take decision in this regard today. "We hold the festival every year as part of Amar Ekushey programmes and this has become a tradition. I hope they will take a positive decision so that we can make the programme a success," Sammilita Sangskritik Jote leader Abdul Quddus told The Daily Star last night.
