332 incidents in Jan
Says Mahila Parishad report


A total of 332 incidents of violence against women occurred in the first month of the new year, according to a report of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad.

The report based on news clippings of 12 national dailies said 37 incidents of rape took place while a woman was gang raped and 12 were killed after rape.

Five women were sexually abused, acid was thrown on 11 and eight were fire-burnt.

Besides, 27 were abducted while 17 women and children were trafficked and two were sold to brothel.

Some 22 women were tortured for dowry and 12 were killed for not giving dowry.

A total of 79 women and children were killed and 41 were physically tortured. The law enforcers repressed 12 women, the report of Mahila Parishad revealed.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Nari Progati Sangha reported 228 incidents of repression against women across the country in January.

It also reported that among them 15 were forced to commit suicide, six were forced to abort child and one was used for producing pornographic movie.

On the other hand, a report of Bangladesh National Women Lawyers' Association (BNWLA) revealed that a total of 166 incidents of violence against women occurred in January.

The report said 32 women were raped, which included gang rapes of three women and three girl children. Three women committed suicide after rape, the report added.

BNWLA prepared the report compiling news from ten leading national dailies.

Eight women were killed after rape and nine died of dowry related violence, the report added.

Besides, 26 women and children were trafficked during the last month, the report said.
