5 killed in road crashes


At least five people were killed and 33 others injured in separate road accidents in Gazipur, Chittagong, Gaibandha and Satkhira yesterday.

Our Correspondent from Tangail reports: Two unidentified people, including a woman, were killed and 22 others injured, six of them critically, in a road accident on Dhaka-Tangail highway at Kaliakair upazila in Gazipur yesterday.

The accident took place at around 10:30am when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus from Madhupur skidded off the road and fell into a ditch after collision with a Tangail-bound passenger bus from Dhaka at Board Ghar area, leaving bus driver and a woman dead on the spot and 22 passengers injured, police and witnesses said.

Local people rushed the injured to hospitals.

Of the injured, 18 people, six of them critically, were admitted to Mirzapur Kumudini Hospital in Tangail.

Police sent the bodies to Gazipur General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Our Correspondent from Chittagong reports: One person was killed and five others were injured in a road accident at Banshkhali upazila yesterday.

The victim was identified as Helal Uddin, 25, of Baharchhari of the upazila.

The accident occurred when a Chittagong-bound jeep popularly known as Chander gari turned upside down and fell into a roadside ditch at Boilgaon area on Chittagong-Banshkhali road at around 7:00am when the vehicle tried to give side to a Chittagong-bound passenger bus.

One person died on the spot and five others were injured.

The injured were identified as Didarul Alam, Md Shahjahan, Nizamuddin, Jamal Uddin and Md Selim

Of them, Didarul was rushed to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in critical condition.

Our Correspondent from Gaibandha adds: One person was killed and six others were injured, three of them critically, when a passenger coach hit a rickshaw van at Palashbari bus stop yesterday.

Witnesses said the accident occurred when a speedy Dhaka-bound coach from Kurigram hit a rickshaw van with seven passengers on board on Rangpur-Bogra highway.

Of the injured, Marium, 40, Munni, 16, and van puller Abdul Quddus were rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Marium succumbed to her injuries in the hospital while two others are fighting for life.

Our Correspondent from Satkhira says: A man was killed in a road accident yester when a truck ran over him near Kumira bus stand in Tala upazila on Satkhira-Khulna road.

The victim was identified as Hannan Sardar, 30, son of Abdul Hai of village Parandah in Sadar upazila.

Quoting local people police said Hannan went to his relative's house at Kumira and the truck ran him over when he was crossing the road at about 5:30am, leaving him dead on the spot.
