'Stop felling of trees to protect environment'

Speakers at a function yesterday called for steps to stop felling of trees in order to protect the environment in the city.The function titled 'Preserving Environment' was organised by Save the Environment Movement (SEM) near the National Botanical Garden. Different cultural organisations, including Mukul Fouj, Mirpur Sangskritik Oikya Forum, Mirpur Sangskritik Oikya Parishad and Probhat Natya Gosthi took part in the function. The speakers called for raising mass awareness in order to encourage people to take care of planted saplings. They also urged the local people to look after a 100-year-old banyan tree on the Beribadh (embankment) near the National Botanical Garden. Such type of old banyan tree across the country should be protected, they added. SEM Convener Abu Naser Khan, Architect Mostaq Kadri and Prof Dipen Bhattacharya of BRAC University also addressed the function.
