Rajuk knocks down 200 shops, recovers 5-bigha land

Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) yesterday recovered five bighas of land from Uttara Sector-7 demolishing more than 200 illegally-built shops.According to Rajuk officials, the price of the recovered land is not less than Tk 40 crore. Meanwhile, two people were injured when a clash erupted between the police and locals during an eviction drive at the city's Mohammadpur area yesterday. The injured are Nurul Islam, 45, a shop employee, and Montu Mia, 32, a rickshaw van puller. Locals got agitated and engaged in a clash with police alleging the law enforcement agency did not give them adequate time for shifting goods. The police evicted around 100 slum houses and shops at Basila road and its adjacent embankment. Later, the army controlled the situation at around 4:30pm. Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) also conducted similar drives at Lalbagh, Hajaribagh and Azimpur. The DCC evicted more than 35 shops and other establishments of a kitchen market built on a designated place for a children park at Azimpur Battala. It also evicted 50 houses at Hajaribagh tannery intersection and 30 temporary houses at Lalbagh.
