Armed raiders looted cash, jewellery and other valuables worth an estimated Tk 87.5 lakh from two houses in the city's Dhanmondi and Lalbagh areas yesterday.A pedestrian was injured while a suspected robber was caught by the mob in one of the incidents. In Dhanmondi, a band of seven robbers entered the 2nd floor flat on Moneswar Road at around 7:10am. They posed as government officials to gain entry into the house of jewellery businessman Jahirul Haque. They tied up the family members at gunpoint and looted Tk 37.85 lakh in cash and 123 tolas of gold ornaments and 70 tolas of gold bars and other valuables. At one stage, as one of the family members began shouting for help, the neighbours rushed there. Desperate to flee the scene, the gang opened fire on them. A stray bullet wounded Fazlur Rahman Chowdhury, 45, an employee of Dutch Bangla Bank and resident of Madhu Bazar. He was then out on his morning walk. Despite the shooting, the locals continued the chase and caught one 'robber', Shahidul Karim Nahid. After a severe beating, he was handed over to Dhanmondi police. Nahid, later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) by police, introduced himself as a contractor. He claimed he was a victim of the circumstances as he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Liakat Hossain, brother of Jahirul Haque, filed a robbery case with the Dhanmondi Police Station the same day. In Lalbagh, robbers looted cash, gold and other valuables worth an estimated Tk 92 thousand and gold ornaments worth around Tk 6.66 lakh from Abdul Karim's house on Noor Sattar Lane. They broke in the flat on the 3rd floor at around 12:30pm and made off with the booty comfortably, said a source in the police. In a case filed with the Lalbagh Police Station, Karim claimed he has been robbed of at least Tk 7. 58 lakh in cash, gold and other valuables.
