'Massive reforms a must to curb corruption'

Leaders of Bangladesh Nagorik Samaj yesterday stressed the need for massive changes in country's political, economic, educational and social systems to get rid of corruption that shrouds almost every sector of the country.

They were speaking at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) titled ' Reformation for Good Governance'.

"The political parties have to submit their audited accounts to the Election Commission (EC). Registration with EC is a must along with a renewal in every two years. Besides, rules should be formulated banning participation of the government officials within five years of retirement," suggested Khabeer Uddin Khan, executive president of Bangladesh Nagorik Samaj.

The speakers also suggested that registration of a political party should be cancelled if it is found giving nominations by taking money or boycotting the Parliamentary session for 90 days consecutively.

The speakers also recommended that the President should recruit the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners (EC) through a dialogue with the political parties. They would be appointed during the tenure of CG and would be in power till dissolution of the Parliament.

They also stressed the need for an independent EC that has the power to punish the culprits involved in any sort of violation of electoral laws. The EC should confer with executive power constitutionally, they added.

General Secretary of Bangladesh Nagorik Samaj ABM Osman Gani read out the written statement while its Chairman Bashirul Haque and Executive Vice President Dr Peter Haldar also spoke.

The speakers also suggested for taking stern and immediate actions against those who violate the election rules and use muscle power. They also suggested for massive reforms in administration, local government and education, land, agriculture and economic sectors.
