Anwarul Tareq sent to jail
Court Correspondent
A Dhaka court yesterday ordered to send businessman Anwarul Islam Tareq held for possessing illegal firearms and ammunition, to jail rejecting a bail petition. Metropolitan Magistrate Mamun Al Rashid passed the order after the investigation officer (IO) produced Tareq before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate on completion of his one day remand in the second phase. The magistrate also directed the jail super to submit a report by February 18 on health condition of Tareq's heart disease following the defence verbal plea if they treated him in jail custody. On January 30, the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Tareq and seized a shotgun, two double-barrel guns, an airgun, three walkie-talkies, 5,242 cartridges and 5,373 rounds of ammunition from his Bijoynagar residence in the city, according to the case statement. The defence lawyers submitted a bail petition saying their client is innocent and possessed the firearms and ammunition just for 'hobby.' Moreover, Tareq had been suffering from heart disease. However, Sub-Inspector Mohiuddin Sarkar of Rab-10, also the investigation officer (IO), informed the court that the information derived from the arrestee was being verified and he should be confined in jail until the investigation completes, the IO said. Earlier, Tareq, 48, was put on a two-day remand for interrogation after a case was filed with Ramna Police Station in this connection.
