'Good governance a must for democracy'

Speakers at a seminar on Sunday stressed the need for good governance to ensure an expected democracy where rule of law and accountability to the parliament will be established.They also asked for training for the members of parliament on good governance so that they can implement it in real life. They were speaking at a seminar titled 'Good governance and development in Bangladesh' organised by the Political Science Department of Dhaka University (DU) at RC Majumdar auditorium. The chief discussant Prof Ataur Rahman said good governance has to be established in order to preserve democracy. "An expected democracy will not come into effect without good governance," he added. A number of students of MSS Final Year of the department presented papers on various issues including good governance, the relation of good governance with development, and good leadership. Nilufar Parvin, assistant professor of the department, said at present there is no practice of democracy within the political parties and this is a major threat to democracy. Prof Aminur Rahman said mutual respect among the political leaders is the precondition of good governance while political commitment is also essential. Prof Ferdous Hasan, Prof Sabbir Ahmed and Prof Sohrab Hossain also spoke with Prof Md Abdul Odud Bhuiyan in the chair.
