VoIP and expatriates
Al Imran Hossain Khan, On e-mail
I praise the government initiative to crackdown on illegal activities, VoIP being one of them. But the government has to take into consideration the viewpoint of non-resident Bangladeshis as well. I am currently working for an investment bank in Bahrain. I used to call home using calling card which used to cost me around BDT 12 per minute. Now I have to pay BDT 46 per minute to call. I find it very expensive, so I wonder how poor wage-earners on whose remittance the country relies so much can afford that call rate. The misery does not end there. Even if I make a direct IDD call it is very difficult to get a line as probably BTTB lines are overloaded. Thus the question arises, which is more important, keeping BTTB profitable or the convenience of people who are working abroad and their near ones at home. Just imagine what could happen to the standard of telecommunication in Bangladesh, if no mobile operators were there. I am sure the present government will take the right decision.
