The V-sign
Ruhul Amin, Dhaka
Shahnoor Wahid's write-up on use of V-sign by the arrested bigwigs is very interesting. These people are escorted with 'jamai ador' by smartly dressed officials. The arrest is used as a photo opportunity and, therefore, the arrestees don the V-sign proudly. In our culture imprisonment of politicians is considered to be an attribute and the experience is used as political capital subsequently. It does not have any implication of defame or dishonour. If they are being arrested for corruption, why is it that they are not handcuffed? In every civilised society a handcuff is the minimum ornament that is put on. It has a demonstration effect which is considered healthy everywhere. Can we not do the same?
