Protect Sundarbans from plunderers
Sundarban Day observed in Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira

The sixth Sundarban Day was observed in Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat districts yesterday with a call for effective government steps against plunder of the world's largest mangrove forest.

In Khulna, the programme included a discussion meeting followed by a cultural function, held at the press club auditorium. Executive Director of Sundarban Academy, Prof Anwarul Kadir presided over the meeting, attended by Director General of National Museum Prof Mahmudul Huq as the chief guest.

Speakers there called upon the people to launch a social movement to save the Sundarbans from plunder and destruction, reports our Staff Correspondent.

Similar programmes were also held in Bagerhat, reports said.

Our Satkhira Correspondent reports: Speakers at a discussion meeting in the town said a political commitment by government is needed alongside creating awareness to preserve the bio-diversity of the Sundarbans.

Bangladesh, particularly its coastal belt will suffer most if the forest and its ecology can not be preserved, they said at a discussion meeting organised by Satkhira Sundarbans Day Udjapan Parishad.

It was held at Satkhira Press Club auditorium with its convenor Principal Asit Kumar Majumdar in the chair.

They also called for creating alternative income sources for people who are now dependent on the forest for their livelihood.

They also urged the government to take up long-term projects to protect the forest.
