Shia leader shot dead in Pakistan

Unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle shot dead a minority Shiite Muslim leader yesterday in northwest Pakistan, sparking sectarian tensions, police said.

Jawad Hussain, 45, was shot dead by two assailants on a main street in the remote tribal town of Dera Ismail Khan, senior police official Aslam Khattak told AFP.

Members of the Shiite community displayed Hussain's body at a main road crossing and staged a protest against the killing.

Hussain had publicly accused militants from the rival Sunni sect of killing local Shiite university professor Nazakat Ali Imrani in December.
