BDR, BSF trade fire at two border points

Border Security Force (BSF) of India and Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) traded gunfire on Haripur border of Thakurgaon and on Benapole border yesterday morning.

BDR officials said the Indian border guards of Khorka camp fired at least 15 shots, targeting the Haripur BDR camp, forcing the BDR to retaliate by firing six bullets.

The exchange of fire between the two border guards took place at 6:00am near main pillar no 357, according to our correspondent.

The officials of 20 Rifles Battalion, Thakurgaon, strongly protested the unprovoked firing by the BSF. They urged the BSF authorities to refrain from such firing, which creates tension among the people of the nearby villages.

Our Benapole correspondent reported that he BDR and BSF personnel exchanged at least 25 rounds of bullet across Agrabhulat border at around 5:30am yesterday.

BDR officials said the border troops of Indian Jhaudanga camp fired several rounds of bullet towards BDR men at around 5:30am. BDR returned fire.

No one was, however, injured during the gunfight, but the encounter has created panic among the villagers in the frontier area.

Immediately after the border skirmish, BSF deployed additional troops at all border outposts. BDR personnel have also been put on alert.
