Bangabir Osmani Smriti Parishad organised the discussion on 'Liberation War and Bangabir MAG Osmani' to mark the 23rd death anniversary of Gen Osmani, the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces during the War of Liberation, in the city.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury attended the programme as the chief discussant while eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain was the special discussant.

Highlighting the historic and patriotic role of Gen Osmani, Dr Iftekhar Ahmed said Gen Osmani performed his duties with unparalleled courage rising above personal interest.

As ardent believer in democracy and humanity, Gen Osmani could realise that stability of democracy and its growth was not possible without good governance, honesty and transparency, he added.

Gen Osmani believed that implementation of these principles should begin at the top level of the administration, Dr Iftekhar Ahmed said, adding that the Liberation War hero always wanted to see the reflection of these qualities in the administration.

Dr Kamal Hossain said Gen Osmani led the freedom fighters in the liberation war to secure independence of the country so that people could enjoy their democratic rights.

Pointing to the recent developments in the country, he appreciated the Bangladesh Army for playing a very important role at every juncture of the national life, including the War of Liberation.

Former adviser to the caretaker government Maj Gen (Retd) Mainul Hussain Chowdhury, Bir Bikram, Parishad advisers Maj Gen (retd) M Azizur Rahman, Bir Bikram, Maj Gen (Retd) Syed Mohammad Ibrahim, Bir Pratik, Jatiya Janata Party President Sheikh Asad, Biswa Bangali Parishad President Abdul Khaleq, Dr CM Delwar Rana, and Chief Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BBS) Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury also spoke at the discussion held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium.
