Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) yesterday tore down parts of around 100 structures that were built deviating from the approved designs along the Mirpur Road in the city. Those include Prince Plaza, Dhanmondi Tower, Genetic Plaza and Mohammadia Supermarket. A team of joint forces led by Rajuk Magistrate ASM Emdadud Dastagir conducted the drive from 10:30am to 8:00pm. The law enforcers bulldozed an ATM booth and a number of shops housed in the basement of Dhanmondi Tower. They also demolished eight to 10 shops constructed illegally at the basement of Prince Plaza. In the original designs, the basements were earmarked for car parking. The team also knocked down the third and fourth floors of Mohammadia Supermarket as those were built without Rajuk approval. It cleared out the ground floor of Hotel Nidmahal as it was supposed to be a car park according to the Rajuk approved design. They also demolished the fifth floor that too was built illegally. At Genetic Plaza on Dhanmondi Road No 27, they knocked down the sixth floor that was extended without authorisation, and shops at the basement. Rajuk had served notices to the owners of the buildings two days ago and asked them to get rid of the illegally constructed parts of the structures. "We have demolished only those constructed deviating from the Rajuk-approved designs," Emdadud Dastagir told The Daily Star last night.
