Prof Yunus for pro-poor world edn policy
Unb, Dubai
Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus yesterday advocated for redesigning the world education policy to give a chance to the poor but meritorious students to enroll in top class universities for higher education. "It's not acceptable that a poor student cannot enroll in a top class university just for lack of money," he told a press conference at Men's College in Dubai. Criticising the present education system, Prof Yunus said the present system sandwiches the student between the reality and the classroom. He said, "The students are now becoming experts in classrooms with only textbooks. But when they step into the real world after completing their courses, they have a shock as the lessons they learn in classrooms and textbooks, and the reality are not the same." Responding to a question, he said Bangladesh has made a remarkable progress in primary education and girls education due to the government policy. "Various incentives have been offered by the government for girls education in Bangladesh," he said adding, "But the country has not done well when it comes to quality." Replying to a question, Yunus said, "People have forced me into politics to get rid of political conflicts and widespread corruption. In the afternoon, the business community of India, Pakistan and Iraq gave a reception to Prof Yunus. In the evening, the Bangladeshi community in Abu Dhabi also accorded a reception to the founder of Grameen Bank.
