Leaders of different political parties have demanded probe into assets of former BNP lawmaker from Khagrachhari Wadud Bhyiuan and his alleged corruption and irregularities in last five years. The demand was raised by front ranking leaders of Awami League, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS). Wadud and his three aides were arrested by joint forces on February 4 from his Kalabagan residence in Khagrachhari hill town on charge of corruption including misappropriation of government funds. A court gave him one month's detention. Accusing Wadud and his party men for plundering development funds, PCJSS leader Suderkor Tripura also blamed him for disturbing communal harmony between Bangalees and indigenous people in the hills. "Wadud is the main man who damaged communal harmony between Bangalee and indigenous people", he said. "His men grabbed lands of indigenous people and government in different areas including Maischhari, Nunchhari, Babupara, Mohalchhari, Fatema Nagar, Latiban, Naya Para, Panchhari, Buyachhari, Comilla Tilla, Golabari, Matiranga, Manikchhari, Ramgarh and Dighinala, claimed Khagrachhari PCJSS president Rosomoy Chakma. Under Wadud's protection, BNP activists were involved in toll collection, rape, tender manipulation, misappropriation of government funds and they filed false cases against the then opposition party activists and also journalists, he alleged. "On behalf of people I demand judicial probe into the crimes and their punishment ", he said. He raised cadre groups styled G-8 and G-6, Rosomoy Chakma said. After becoming lawmaker, Wadud Bhuiyan replaced his tin-shed building with a palatial complex. Rosomoy claimed that the Tk 7 crore house was built by encroaching upon government lands and forcibly occupying 10 decimal land of a poor man named Naderuzzaman. A special police team on Friday seized the house, named 'Baithak'. Wadud also owns two houses at Kushumbug in Chittagong city and at New DOHS in the capital sources claimed. Khagrachhari LDP secretary Nasir Uddin Chowdhury said BNP betrayed with a section of Bangalees by flouting its promise to rehabilitate about 3 lakh in cluster villages. "It could not rehabilitate a single Bangalee family on their own land in last five years", he said. "And so he (Wadud) is not popular among the Bangalee community", he said. A high official of CHT Development Board (CHTDB) seeking anonymity alleged that Wadud and his party men misappropriated over Tk 2 core in the name of setting wooden pillars for protection of roads. At least 150 Zia Smriti Sangshad offices were set up in 8 upazilas in the district, each involving at least Tk 2 lakh, from funds of CHTDB, he said. It should be investigated, he said. District Awami League secretary Zahedul Alam alleged that 13 AL activists were killed in last five years in the district. They include Sadar upazila party leader Nurul Islam alias PC Nuru, Kamal, Matiranga upazila AL leader Mohammad Yasin Member, Jubo Leauge leader Mohammad Ibrahim, Amir Hossain, Sechchasebak Leauge leader Helal Uddin, Rahim, Mujib, Ramgarh upazila Sechchhasebak Leauge leader Nurul Alam, Jubo Leauge leader Mohammad Yasin, Chhatra League leaders Mongri Marma and Firoz Ahamad. He said at least 235 false cases were filed against AL men and another 37 against 20 journalists for filing reports on corruption by the lawmaker and his men. Many AL leaders and activists had to leave Khagracchhari, he added. He also alleged that BNP men turned several Rassel Smriti Sangsad offices of Awami League in the town into party offices. Funds for this were provided from the district council, he claimed. Former district council chairman Nakkhatra Lal Dev Barmon and its member Harun-or-Rashid had to leave Khagrachhari as they protested atrocities of Wadud's musclemen, he claimed and demanded probe into corruption and irregularities by BNP men in last five years. Most development works went to BNP cadres virtually without any tender while more than 500 enlisted constructors in the district remained idle, alleged Tajul Islam, a contractor in Sadar upazila. There was hardly any government and private office in the district which escaped toll collection by BNP cadres, he claimed. District BNP orgasising secretary Mostafizur Rahman Millat, when contacted, however refuted the allegations against Wadud and his party men. BNP believes in democracy and it is a party formed with grassroots people. He also refuted the allegation that political opponents faced repression or false cases during last five years. BNP implemented a lot of developing projects in Khagrachari, he said. Mostafiz refuted the allegation of grabbing Rasel Smriti Sangsad offices. On building Zia Smriti Sangsad offices, he said it a democratic right of any political party or cultural organisation.
