AFC secretary to grace gala B. League opener

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will send a three-member delegation to Bangladesh for the launching of the Professional Football League.

Dato Paul Mony, who replaced the long serving Peter Velappan as the general secretary of the AFC this January, will head the mission which will be present during the opening ceremony on March 2.

The B. League will begin with the two top-budgeted teams -- Abahani and Muktjoddha Sangsad -- pitted against each other at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

AFC's development officer Imteaz Rahman and football writer Chetan Kulkarni are the other members of the delegation.

The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) yesterday confirmed that it has taken all steps to make the opening ceremony grand and programmes will include a concert by star singer Ayub Bachchu.

Before the match, ex-players are expected to take part in a march-past, followed by songs and band display.

Although all the home teams are responsible for organising matches including ticket selling and security, the opener will belong to the BFF, told general secretary Anwarul Hoque Helal.

"We have reached an agreement with Muktijoddha, the home team of the inaugural match, in this issue. As the BFF will spend a lot of money to make the memorable event colourful, we will have the rights of ticket selling on March 2," Helal told yesterday.

"We will give them a portion of the gate money," he added without elaborating.

The clubs, meanwhile, will have to deposit seven percent of their gate money within three days of each matchday to the BFF according to agreement. It was learnt that the 11 clubs have already started printing tickets.

The home teams will also provide only practice facilities for touring teams.

The BFF has given one Nike Aero 90 football -- the official matchball for the tournament -- for practice to each club, who would be able to buy more footballs from the BFF if needed.

The home teams would also get four advertisement billboards at the ground on matchday for their own sponsors.

The eight Dhaka clubs, in the end, could consider themselves fortunate as the BFF has decided to take care of the Bangabandhu Stadium, the lone venue for all the capital sides.

With less than five days to go, preparation looked hectic and the pro-league officials were still reminding the clubs of their duties. The clubs will take part in the last seminar on event management organised by the federation today.
