Rajuk continues eviction drive

An eviction team of Rajdhani Unnayan Katripakkha (Rajuk) yesterday vacated the ground floors of two residential hotels as these were not used for car parking and demolished illegal structures of two high-rise buildings in the city.

Armed with bulldozers, the eviction team first raided Hotel Washington where the authorities were using their ground floor as shops and store room. As per the original plan, the ground floor was meant for car parking.

Police beat up and detained two officials of Hotel Washington in Gulshan as they argued and did not want to help the eviction team during the drive.

"We instructed them to remove everything from the ground floor and keep it open for car parking. But they did not agree and tried to resist us. So police arrested them but later they were freed," said ASM Emdadul Dastagir, the magistrate of Rajuk.

Later the hotel authorities agreed to use the ground floor as car park.

The eviction team also ensured a car parking space at Hotel Midtown.

The team knocked down the illegal part of a residential hotel named Hotel Westin Plaza which was constructed encroaching the footpath.

Besides, the eviction team vacated the office of the Asset Properties Ltd on the ground floor of its building which was meant for storehouse.

Later, the mobile court found a high-rise building named Rupayan Golden Edge which was constructed violating its original plan and used for commercial purpose instead of residential building.

However, the court did not take any action against them.

When asked, the magistrate said they were conducting the drive only to ensure car parking space at high-rise buildings.
