Baby Zinc launched in Sylhet

About 30,000 to 70,000 children fall victim to Diarrhea every year in the country, speakers said at the divisional launching of Baby Zinc at Saifur Rahman auditorium in the city yesterday afternoon.

Acme Laboratories is producing and marketing the tablet under an agreement signed with the ICDDRB.

Water stagnancy, over population, unhygienic condition and lack of health awareness are the major reasons behind the outbreak of Diarrhea in Bangladesh, the speakers observed.

Prof Md Ekhlasur Rahman, head of the Pediatric, Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, was present as the chief guest in the function while HSIDG division Director of ICDDRB and Project Chief Prof Charles P Larson was the main speaker. AZ Mahbub Ahmed, civil surgeon of Sylhet, also attended the programme as special guest.

The speakers said diarrhea-attacked children lose water, salt and other minerals due to dehydration, which make them weaker. Zinc helps stopping loose motion and lessens the risk of getting attacked again.

With recommendations from the WHO and Unicef, the Ministry of Health & Family Planning had approved the Zinc tablet for treatment alongside the oral saline for children between 6 months and 5 years, they added.
