MP Sujan Murder
HC sets aside lower court sentence
Unb, Dhaka
As the state counsel failed to prove the murder charges, the High Court yesterday set aside a lower court verdict that had sentenced one person to death and four others to life term for killing former BNP MP from Brahmanbaria-6 constituency Shahjahan Hawladar Sujan. Sujan, 35, was found dead near Doyel Chattar on the Dhaka University campus in July, 2001, five days after his abduction by rivals. After hearing the appeals filed by the convicts, a division bench comprising Justice Khondker Musa Khaled and Justice AKM Asaduzzaman set aside the sentences awarded by the Speedy Trial Tribunal, Dhaka on March 17, 2004. The trial court had sentenced Kajol Ahmed Jalali to death, while Dr Rawshan Alam, a BNP leader and owner of Libra Pharmaceuticals, Humayun Kabir alias Phool Miah, Ziauddin alias Bayes and Ibrahim Noor alias Apu to life term imprisonment.
