Obaidul Quader arrested, ex-Jamaat MP surrenders

The joint forces arrested Awami League (AL) Joint General Secretary Obaidul Quader, raiding another AL leader's house in the city's Khilgaon area early yesterday.

In Satkhira, former Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam, who like Quader is among the 50 graft suspects listed recently by the government, surrendered to the joint forces yesterday afternoon.

Meanwhile, ex-state minister for education ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has been sued for extortion, looting and assault. Three cases have been filed against him with the Cognisance Court in Chandpur in three days since March 6, court sources said.

In another development, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) seized a Mercedes-Benz automobile of detained AL leader and former minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain from Suvastu Tower at Panthapath yesterday, sources said.

Later, the luxury car was taken to Rab-2 office at Maghbazar.

Besides, the army-led crack forces arrested senior vice-president of Sramik Dal Abul Kashem Chowdhury and Bogra's Gabtoli municipal Chairman Morshed Milton in separate raids at Gulshan in the capital yesterday.

Sources said Kashem is an influential trade union leader while Morshed was a close aide to Tarique Rahman, the detained senior joint secretary general of BNP.

Apart from those, 1,460 people Have been rounded up on various charges in the 24 hours ending at 6:00am yesterday.

Newaz Khan's Khilgaon house at around 4:00am and arrested Quader, also a former state minister for youth, sports and cultural affairs.

They also arrested Ali Newaz and seized a licensed pistol from the house.
Ex-jamaat Lawmaker Surrenders
Our Satkhira correspondent reports: Former Jamaat lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam went to an army camp in Satkhira town in the afternoon and turned himself in. A number of local leaders and activists were accompanying him.

Nazrul was elected from Satkhira-5 (Shyamnagar) as a four-party alliance candidate in 2001 election.

Allegations of corruption, nepotism and misuse of power are rife against him, sources said.
Cases Against Milon
Our correspondent reports: Kamal Hossain, senior vice-president of Kochua Jubo League, filed a case against Milon on March 8 for assault on him.

Fuad Hassan, president of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Kachua unit, filed another case on March 7. Nobir Hossain, a shopkeeper in Kachua, filed a case on March 6 alleging that a gang of 25 people beat him up and looted his shop on orders from Milon on December 30 last year.

Our correspondent from Meherpur adds: Police arrested local Jamaat leader Moshiur Rahman Shaban at his house at Gangni upazila on Thursday.

Moshiur, also the chairman of Dhankhala union parishad (UP), stands accused in a double-murder case.

UNB adds: Army personnel arrested a UP chairman at Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia yesterday morning.

Army sources said Abdul Aziz, Betbaria UP chairman and general secretary of local BNP, is accused of murder and other crimes.

Another UNB report said the joint forces yesterday held Nurullah Raihan, general secretary of Laksam upazila BNP, at a medical centre at Laksam in Comilla yesterday.

BSS from Rangpur reports: Members of the Rab arrested Gopal Chandra Biswas, accused in a number of criminal cases, on Wednesday night.

The elite crime busters also recovered three rounds of ammunition during the raid.

Our staff correspondent from Khulna reports: the joint forces arrested Jubo League Central Vice-Chairman Shahid Iqbal Bithar on Thursday at a city market.

The Jubo League leader was wanted in several cases filed for extortion and tender manipulation.

Besides, Khulna police arrested an operative of outlawed New Biplobi Communist Party in the early hours yesterday at Hogledanga village under Batiaghata upazila. A revolver was recovered from the arrestee, Ajit Biswas, 28.
