Violent protest after 2 RMG workers killed in road crash


Hundreds of garment workers yesterday blocked traffic on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Kanchpur for two hours, damaged a number of vehicles and set fire to a bus that killed two garment workers at Tatki on the highway in the morning.

The accident occurred at about 8:45am when the Sylhet-bound passenger bus collided with a tempo, killing garment workers Nasrin, 22, of Sinha Textiles, and Muhammad Ali, 30, of Joya Garments, on the spot and injuring ten others.

Of the injured, tempo driver Majeedul and garment workers Ratna, Salina, Rahela, Rabeya, Sonia, Riya and Razia are now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Naryanganj Sadar hospital.

Sonia, who is receiving treatment at the DMCH, told The Daily Star that they were going to their workplaces at Kanchpur by the tempo.

Witnesses said as the news of the accident spread, the workers of different garment units located at Kanchpur put up barricades on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway, disrupting traffic for more than two hours.

Later, police and army personnel went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
