Platini backs measures against violence

UEFA President Michel Platini has voted in favour of implementing a new measure to combat the increased violence which has plagued the sport across Europe in recent months.

UEFA President Michel Platini has voted in favour of implementing a new measure to combat the increased violence which has plagued the sport across Europe in recent months.

The former France international told Euronews: "I think we have to create a kind of 'Europool' to help our sport live in a correct manner, by asking help from politicians, councils and European institutions."

The planned Europool would consist of sporting governing bodies such as the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and the Olympic Committee in order to form a European decision-making body that would monitor all branches of the sport.

Platini, who will meet with the president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso on Monday said: "I think that Mr Barroso must place his confidence in us, in me, in other people that organise football and we should regulate this sport which has been the most popular sport, the most beautiful sport in the world." The new UEFA president added: "We need to eradicate violence in stadiums, by removing people that don't belong there.

"I don't have the means to do this, but I do, however, have the means to convince people who do have the means to do something about it."

The planned measure comes in a bid to eradicate the kinds of violence which saw an Italian policeman die during a Serie A derby game between Palermo and Catania and also recent clashes between fans and police in both the French and German leagues.
