Two extortion cases filed against Tarique, Mamun


Two extortion cases were filed with the city's Gulshan Police Station last night against BNP's Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman and his close friend Giasuddin Al Mamun.

Harun Ferdousi, a businessman, filed one case accusing five persons including Tarique and Mamun of forcing him to pay them Tk 81 lakh.

The other accused are Tarique's associates Babul Kazi, Enamul Haque and Giasuddin Quaiyum.

The complainant said the five accused extorted the money at different times between March 2, 2002 and December 28, 2006.

Khan Mohammad Aftabuddin from Gulshan filed the other case with the same police station accusing seven persons including Mamun of extorting Tk 1.32 crore from him on different occasions between June 24, 2005 and June 26, 2006.

Tarique, now in jail on a one-month detention, is already facing a Tk 1 crore extortion charge while Mamun is now on a five-day remand in an arms case.
