EU leaders sign Berlin Declaration
To mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, German Chancellor and President of the European Council Angela Merkel, President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Pöttering and President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso have signed the 'Berlin Declaration', says a press release of the German Embassy.

The declaration was signed at an official ceremony at the German Historical Museum in Berlin on March 25.

The Berlin Declaration pays tribute to the progress Europe has achieved over the past 50 years. The European Union is more than just a common economic space. It is also a community of shared values.

This foundation of shared values and common outlook on life is crucial if Europe as a political entity is to remain able to act. The Berlin Declaration is hence a reaffirmation, too, of the fundamental values that unite people across the European Union.

The declaration also addresses the tasks ahead, the challenges of the 21st century that Europe can tackle successfully only by a united effort.

With the Berlin Declaration, the 27 member states together with the European Commission and the European Parliament have directed the European Union towards inspiring goals, thus lending Europe new momentum.
