Up from bed they see the coffins of the kingpins

Locals of Nayapara in Jamalpur were a bit surprised to see so many policemen and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) personnel in their neighbourhood early yesterday morning. They had two coffins with them.

They later came to know that the bodies were of two Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) leaders Abdur Rahman and his younger brother Ataur Rahman Sunny -- whose executions were carried out early yesterday in secrecy.

The news moved the locals as they had heard of the notorious militant kingpins who once terrorised the country by their bombing operations. This time they were the witnesses to their fall.

The news of their bodies arriving spread like wildfire in the entire neighbourhood. Within a short time, thousands of people thronged the place where the bodies were kept. The law enforcers were struggling to handle the huge crowd.

Law enforcers later took the bodies of JMB chief Shaikh Abdur Rahman and his brother Sunny to their village home at Charshi Khalifapara in Titpalli in Jamalpur and they were buried there around 12:45pm, our Tangail correspondent reports.

Four of their accomplices who were sentenced to death for killing two judges in Jhalakathi were also executed at roughly the same time at different jails in the country.

The six JMB leaders were hanged at Kashimpur (Gazipur), Mymensingh, Comilla and Pabna jails.

The bodies of the six JMB leaders were sent to their village homes around 7:00am yesterday.

Relatives of the militants received the bodies while curious locals thronged their houses to have a glimpse of the bodies. Five JMB kingpins were buried before Juma prayers yesterday and one was buried after the Juma prayers.

JMB's Second-in-command Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai and Majlish-e-Shura member Abdul Awal were executed at Mymensingh Central Jail, our Mymensingh correspondent reports.

Around 7:00am, Bangla Bhai's body was taken to Karnipara in Gabtoli in Bogra amid tight security. Retired schoolteacher Nazir Uddin, Bangla Bhai's father, received his body from the law enforcers. A huge crowd thronged the area as curious locals wanted to see the body. Law enforcers again struggled to handle the crowd.

After Juma prayers, his body was buried at his family graveyard. However, his close relatives were shocked to learn that his execution was carried out. They claimed they were not allowed to see him before his execution despite a directive from the home ministry.

Our Rajshahi correspondent adds: The body of JMB Majlish-e-Shura member Abdul Awal was handed over to his brother Abdul Mannan around 5:30am at Kaliganj of Shingra in Natore.

Awal, also the son-in-law of JMB chief Abdur Rahman, was buried at his family graveyard after his namaz-e-janaza at Manamali Institute ground.

JMB's suicide squad member Iftekhar Hasan Al Mamun was buried at Khjapur graveyard in Rajshahi before the Juma prayers yesterday after he was hanged early yesterday at Kashirampur Central Jail in Gazipur, our Gazipur correspondent reports.

Mamun's father Lal Chand received his body. He demanded punishment to those who persuaded his son into the wrong path. Mamun's relatives were wondering how a "good boy" like Mamun became a killer.

Our Pabna correspondent adds: JMB's Majlish-e-Shura member and explosives expert Khaled Saifullah was executed at Pabna District Jail.

Saifullah's body was sent to his village Bododia in Kaukhila in Pirojpur where his brother Helal Salauddin received his body, our Barisal correspondent reports.

He was buried at his family graveyard.
