Four killed in road accidents

Four people were killed in separate road accidents in three districts yesterday.Our correspondent in Gaibandha reports: Two persons were killed and 35 others injured in a road accident at Avirampur or Bogra-Rangpur highway in the morning. Police said a Rangpur-bound passenger coach of Hanif Enterprise hit a rice-laden truck, which remained stranded on the highway at Avirampur, 10 kilometres from Gobindaganj upazila, after it went out of order. At the same time, another Parbatipur-bound bus hit the truck and the coach, injuring 37 passengers. Two of them -- Rafiqul Islam, 40, and Abu Zafar, 45, -- died after they were taken to a health complex. The condition of seven passengers is stated to be critical. Road communication remained disrupted for two hours after the accident. Fire brigade personnel from Gaibandha rushed to the spot and restored normal communication at around 10:00am. UNB adds: Secretary of a Union Parishad was killed and another person injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Shayestaganj Dewandi point in Habiganj. Masuk Mia, 32, secretary of Lakhai Union Parishad and resident of Dhewa Tali village in Chunarughat, along with the other person, Khokon, was going to his workplace by a motorcycle, but a speeding bus hit them, killing Masuk on the spot at about 3:00pm. Injured Khokon was admitted to Sadar Hospital. A case was filed with the local police station. In Comilla, an unidentified man was killed and three others were injured when two trucks rammed into a microbus at Chhapua in Chouddahgram upazila on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in the morning. Police said two Chittagong-bound trucks from Dhaka rammed into a Feni-bound microbus at 9:30am, killing one of the microbus passengers on the spot and injuring three others. The drivers of the trucks managed to escape. The injured were admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital.
